program
“A recurring theme in network aesthetics is the questioning of how data is interpreted and presented by the software.” (Lillemose, 2006)
program is a movement to produce new possibilities outside the limitations of Vilem Flusser's concept of the 'program' in digital imaging.
Vilem Flusser described the 'program' as the possibilities and limitations contained within the mechanical combinations and purposes of a given apparatus. A single digital scan of Joseph Nicéphore Niépce’s View from the Window at Le Gras attempts to create new form visual forms outside the 'program' of digital image making the 'mis-translations' of the file's original data. These re-visualizations expose the fragility of digital information and it's dependence of translation for representation, but also introduces new forms of image beyond the intended limitations of contemporary tools.
